The epitome of beauty and grace, these majestic dogs were once humans’ hunting companions for centuries. Intelligent, confident, and independent, these dogs are also fast, agile athletes who love to run. An Afghan hound requires two hours of daily exercise and will enjoy walking, running, hiking, and swimming. To put their natural instincts to best use, they also love activities like lure coursing. They must be in an enclosed area when playing and running since they’ll instinctively chase after small animals outside. Friendly and sweet, this breed is an excellent family dog, as they can get along with dogs and even cats if socialized early on. However, households with pocket pets and birds may not be a suitable fit due to their high prey drive. Credit: pinchi panchu/Shutterstock Nicknamed the "40 mile-per-hour couch potato," the greyhound is just as happy to spend the day lounging beside you on the sofa as they are reaching high sprint speeds...that is, when they want to. Greyhounds are among some of the most iconic breeds with long snouts and are also known for their tall, slim stature, long, muscular legs, and smooth, short coat. Due to their low body fat, they're sensitive to hot and cold weather, meaning they'll need to avoid being out in extreme heat and should wear a sweater or jacket if they're out in colder temperatures. While they love to run, they don't require extensive exercise and are happy to go for short walks and explore. Make sure to keep them on a leash since they have a strong predatory instinct.
