Mahomes and her husband Patrick, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, have worked side-by-side with professional dog trainer Tom Davis for years to train their dogs Steel and Silver, an eight-year-old American pit bull terrier and four-year-old cane corso. "Davis has been a huge part of both our dogs' behavior, happiness, and overall health," Mahomes tells The Spruce Pets. "Working with a professional dog trainer helps address and prevent behavioral issues, ensuring a well-behaved dog." A well-trained dog can not only make your life as a dog parent easier, but it can also make your dog happier, too. Dogs thrive in a predictable environment, and training lets them know what's expected of them in and out of the house. "Training creates better communications and strengthens the bond between us and our dogs," Mahomes says. The key to successful dog training, whether you hire a professional or take on the task yourself, is consistency and showing your dogs grace as they attempt to learn a new skill. "By having dogs of my own I've learned so much," she says. "Patience is number one. I’ve learned that in order to have well-trained dogs, you need to invest in training tactics and innovative products for both you and your dog to be happy and safe!" Following a recommendation from Davis, Mahomes recently implemented the PetSafe Guardian GPS + Tracking Fence into her dogs' training toolkit, which helps her keep track of Steel and Silver while they romp around outdoors at their Kansas City home or while on the go when the family travels together. Having a dedicated outdoor space to explore is beneficial for any dog, but breeds like Steel and Silver require a good amount of daily exercise and playtime, meaning the more space they have to run around, the better. A GPS tracker can help dog parents keep an eye on their pets if they're balancing multiple tasks, like running after small kids while letting their dogs explore. "As a busy mom, it lets the dogs have the freedom to enjoy the yard while I have the peace of mind that they’re safe while I’m inside with the kids," Mahomes says. "I can check the app on my phone and keep tabs on exactly where they are in the yard at any time." When they're through playing outdoors, Steel and Silver love spending time with Mahomes' children, daughter Sterling Skye and son Patrick "Bronze" Lavon. "They've basically been growing up together," she says. "We followed tips from Tom, of course, around bringing our babies home and slowly introducing them to the dogs with constant supervision, but it was like the dogs already knew our kids, and our kids love our dogs so much!" Top 10 Tips for Childproofing a Dog If you are a dog parent who has been struggling to train your puppy or adult dog on your own or just don't know where to start, you're not alone. Many dog parents have taken the leap to hire professional help and reaped the benefits, including Mahomes. When looking for a dog trainer, ask about any certification programs they've completed, their style of training, and any tools and products they use to make sure it's the right fit for both you and your pups. "Hiring a dog trainer can be a worthwhile investment in both your dog's life and your family's life," Mahomes says. "For us, hiring Tom changed our lives!" Explore more: Dogs Dog Training Tips
