They looked after each other at a cat rescue and are now inseparable, though they could not be more different. Church (left) and Wally (right). Credit: The Spruce Pets Church is the tabby. He's high-strung, playful, clever, and likes attention, even if he doesn't like sitting still to receive it. Wally (white) is skittish, naps a lot, hides a lot, but enjoys a long, once-daily petting session. Every night, they want to play with a wand toy, though they have very different play styles. Here's how I found the best wand toy for both of them. Final Verdict After testing more than half a dozen wand toys, my favorite is the Pet Fit for Life Cat Wand Teaser. It's the perfect size for a wand toy, doesn't get tangled, and has a lobster clasp for easy lure swapping. It's Church-approved. The other wand toy I can't live without is the Cat Dancer Rainbow Cat Charmer. This is Wally's favorite. It's a gentle ribbon, made of extremely stretchy rainbow fleece, and it's perfect for kittens (though my adult cats love it, too). It’s a useful length, which lets me play with Church and Wally from a seated position, cast a lure part of the way across the room, or tease them out if they don't want to get too close. Too many cat wand toys are too short, making it so I have to practically stand on top of my cats to play with them. This isn't good for skittish cats like Wally. Others extend even longer than the Pet Fit for Life wand, though those are typically telescoping wands, which I've found to be too bendy and hard to control. This Pet Fit for Life wand finds the best middle ground by dividing its wand rod into two pieces. That means I have to reassemble the wand every time I take it out of the drawer, but the process is so easy—sliding the two parts together—that it’s barely an inconvenience. Both halves are flexible polycarbonate, making this wand especially durable, with a reinforced eyelet on the end that helps keep it from tangling (and would make replacing the line a cinch, too). I particularly like the woven nylon line, which is like a shoestring. It's durable, non-flexible, and easy to maneuver through the air. I previously owned a wand toy that had a thin wire line. It whipped through the air so fast you could hear it whistle. It worked well for Church, who relished the speed and difficulty, but it was too scary for Wally, and it even felt dangerous when it accidentally whacked one of them. The line on the Pet Fit for Life toy is soft enough that Wally doesn't freak out if it hits him, but taut enough that I can change its direction in mid-air, which is key to getting Church to backflip for it. While I do wish the Pet Fit for Life wand included more lures, the two feather lures it comes with are excellent. In my experience, feather lures work better than any other type and with the widest range of cats. If you want to purchase lures separately, they’re easy to attach to the Pet Fit for Life wand’s lobster-claw clasp. There is one major downside to the Pet Fit for Life Cat Wand Teaser: sometimes the two halves of the pole get yanked apart, and the front half of the wand falls to the floor. But even this has an upside, since Church loves it when he yanks the wand apart, and he can run off with the lure like it's his prize. This type of wand toy is often called a “teaser.” The Cat Dancer Rainbow Cat Charmer is the ideal teaser, because its ribbon is extra-long, very soft, and surprisingly durable, with a stretchy, rainbow fleece fabric. With 48 inches of ribbon attached to a flexible, 16-inch wand, the Rainbow Cat Charmer provides a lot of fabric for cats to swat at, which often results in fun tangles as they roll around and paw at the ribbon. It's like a ball of string that you control. The light, broad strip of fabric flows through the air relatively slowly, making the Charmer very easy to catch—look elsewhere if you’d like a wand toy that gratifies your adult cat’s hunting instincts. Instead, the Rainbow Cat Charmer is ideal for kittens and gentler modes of play. While the Rainbow Cat Charmer could never wear out the more athletic Church, he still enjoyed playing with it. It's especially good for enticing or keeping a cat entertained while they're curled up on a piece of furniture—they don't even have to get up to have fun. For scaredy cats, like Wally, the Rainbow Cat Charmer can be downright empowering. During our play sessions with the Pet Fit for Life wand, Wally likes to stand in the background and watch. Sometimes, with very careful teasing, he can be coaxed into swatting at a feather lure or even trying out a jump or two. But Wally attacks the Rainbow Cat Charmer right away—it's a surprising confidence-builder! I'm Andrew, a senior editor for The Spruce Pets. I have tested hundreds of products—including lots of cat toys and cat trees—and have done some silly things to try out new stuff, like run dog strollers through an obstacle course. My favorite products to recommend are the ones I use at home with Church and Wally, like our his-and-his automatic feeders (yes, I bought two of them). I feel especially confident about our wand toy picks, because we play with our winner nearly every night. I've purchased seven wand toys, including four of our yourecommendations. I also live in a building with lots of cats, and my neighbors and I cat-sit for each other all the time. Some of the wand toys on this list are their cats' favorites, which I get to test out whenever I'm checking in on Bootsy, Ghidorah, Carolyn, Harvey, or one of my other whisker-y neighbors. Church and Wally What I Looked For I went through multiple wands before finding the one that works for both Church and Wally. After playing with lots of different wands for hundreds of combined hours, a few qualities stood out as most important.Wand LengthA common length for wand toy handles is 12 inches—they're often elastic, and bend a little as you swing them or when your cat grabs the lure. But I think 12 inches is too short. Another common length is 38 inches, which is too long. Many retractable wands are this long when fully extended. But this long length makes them flimsy and too difficult to steer. When playing with Church, I need to be able to move the lure to entice him, with enough precision that I can easily change the direction in mid-air or pull the lure out of his reach. This is easiest with a stiff, non-telescoping wand.Line TypeThere are many different types of lines, some with distinct advantages.Steel Wire: Some teaser wands feature a stiff wire, which bends but doesn't twist or drape. Instead, these lures bow back and forth. Stiff wire teasers are great for random, chaotic motion, but not so much for control. We recommend one teaser with a stiff wire—cats love it—but you can't really steer it. Instead, these teasers bounce back when your cats swat at them.Wire Line: Also common are wands with a thin metal wire line. These can be controlled expertly and whipped around a room very quickly. While my more athletic cat loved chasing a metal line, I never felt very comfortable using it. I was always worried about the line wrapping around one of his legs and hurting him when I yanked it, though that never happened. They can also get tangled easily.Woven Nylon: This is my favorite type of line. It's got a little flex, so your cat can yank on it, but it isn't so stretchy that you can't control it. It's heavy enough that it won't get tangled, but loose enough that you can still move it quickly through the air.Polyester Bungee: This type of line is really stretchy and is really only suited for big lures that your cat can sink their claws into, like teasers with catnip lures. When your cat lets go, the lure bounces away on its bungee cord. These are impossible to control, so they're not very good for hunting play. They're more so you can dangle a lure directly down to your cat.Rope: Woven rope line is really stiff, heavy, and inflexible. It's not great for a lot of play types, but it is good if you're just dragging a lure along the ground.Replaceable Lure ClaspThere are lots of wands with replaceable lures, but many of them have cheap-o clasps that are like a safety pin. These stink. Look for a wand with a lobster clasp, which is way less irritating. As for the lures themselves, I like feathers best, but Church and Wally love variety—your cat probably will too. More We Recommend Best Kit MeoHui Retractable Teaser Cat Wand Set Credit: Amazon $10 at Amazon What We Like: Comes with two telescoping wands; easy-to-use lobster clasp; comes with nine luresWhat We Don't Like: The lures have attached bells, which is a little much; feather lures get torn apart quickly; telescoping wands are hard to steer The Best Kit: The MeoHui Retractable Cat Wand Toy comes with two telescoping wands, five feather lures, and four wiggle worms. All the lures have bells attached, which may attract your cat initially, but can be a bit much during playtime—Wally was terrified of them. It also comes with replacement lines. Extending from 16 to 39 inches, with over 23 inches of line, the MeoHui gives you a longer overall reach than our favorite lure, though it can get a little flimsy and whippy when fully extended. The wands include thoughtful features like the lobster clasps and foam handles, but without any way to lock the telescoping sections, your wand will sometimes retract or extend when you'd rather it didn't. We've also found that telescoping wands are likely to be less durable over time. If you've never used a wand toy with your cat, this is a great starter kit. It's cheap and it has lots of different toys to try. Both Church and Wally love it. The Cat Dancer is remarkably simple—there are no replacement lures to attach, and no separate line and wand. Instead, it’s just a springy steel wire (approximately 36 inches of it) and five little rolled-up pieces of cardboard fixed to one end. Since the Cat Dancer tends to bounce around everywhere, creating chaotic motions, you don't really control it like a traditional wand toy and line. Instead, you dangle the Cat Dancer lure over your cat's head and let them do the rest. The Cat Dancer may not look like much, but my cats go absolutely bonkers for those little bits of cardboard. Cheap fun, with universal cat appeal Credit: The Spruce Pets Credit: The Spruce Pets Credit: The Spruce Pets Best Catnip Lure Frisco Bird with Feathers Teaser Wand Cat Toy with Catnip Credit: Chewy View on Chewy What We Like: Flexible wand; bouncy line, catnip included; lots of stimulation, including crinklingWhat We Don't Like: Catnip isn't refillable; hard to steer The Best Catnip Lure: With a flexible wand, a stretchy cord, and a feathery bird filled with catnip, the Frisco Bird with Feathers Teaser Wand gets my cats excited, but doesn't foster very athletic play. With its stretchy line, my cats would pull down the lure and nuzzle it against the floor. They'd leap for it if the lure got loose and bounced away, but it was definitely a less active form of play. There is also a faint crinkling sound in the body of the bird that is filled with catnip. The bird is small, but shaped well for bunny kicking, and the eyes are stitched in so there are no small plastic pieces that could pop off during play. The wand toy is only available at Chewy and comes in two colors. The catnip isn't refillable, but you could spray it with our favorite catnip spray, SmartyKat Catnip Mist Spray, if it needs a refresh. The durable braided line is a little too heavy to control easily, but it's good for dangling over your cat or dragging along the floor. I use it on the carpet runner in my hall, dragging it behind me to lure Church out from around the corner. It's too bad you can't replace the battery or the catnip, but this lure is a fun novelty while it lasts. Best Replaceable Lures Pet Fit For Life 7 Piece Replacement Feather Pack Credit: Amazon $11 at Amazon View on Chewy What We Like: Lots of multi-feather lures; mouse toy includes a noisemaker; easy eye-hook connectorsWhat We Don't Like: Feathers come off fast The Best Replacement Lures: The four feather toys included in the Pet Fit For Life 7 Piece Replacement pack are multi-hued, dense with feathers, and surprisingly large—bigger than most other feather lures I’ve used. The long, stiff feathers make a satisfying whizzing noise when whipped through the air. My cats can’t get enough of them, and these lures have inspired some astounding aerial acrobatics. Plus, they attach easily to a wand with an eye-hook connector. Unfortunately, my cats love feathered lures so much that they quickly start tearing feathers loose, and you can expect the same with these. The non-feather lures are also a well-considered set. I’ve found that the long furry tail lures are fun to pounce on, but produce a little too much drag for quick course changes. Cats who are experienced with wand toys catch them a little too easily, repeatedly interrupting play—fun once in a while, but you don’t need more than one. The squiggly worm is another fun lure, though our cats don’t seem as satisfied once the lure is caught as they are with a feather. Finally, there’s the furry mouse toy, which has a hard plastic body and something bouncing around inside that creates an irresistible noise. It’s a little harder to play with, but cats love pouncing on it, in part thanks to its more solid presence. All in all, it’s hard to imagine a more useful pack of refill lures, since every lure is a blast to play with, and it includes plenty of the feathered lures that cats seem to love most. Comes with four feather lures, a worm wriggler, a fuzzy tail, and a mouse Most Natural-Looking Feathers EcoCity Natural Feather Teaser Cat Toy Credit: Amazon $10 at Amazon What We Like: No chemical dyes used; real feathers; retractable wandWhat We Don't Like: Could be better quality; thin wire may tangle Most Natural-Looking Feathers: Your cat may love color, but realistic-looking bird feathers may get more attention and stir their hunting instincts. What really stands out about EcoCity's Natural Feather Teaser Cat Toy is the natural look of these feathers. No chemical dyes are involved in the making of these feathers. The lightweight, retractable wand can reach from 17 to 37 inches long. It has a rubber handle, and the feathers move very fast on the wire to make the feathers mimic the look of birds in flight. These feathers are meant to retain their original colors and patterns. Easy-to-open hooks hold the feathers securely to the wand. It's good to note, however, that although the manufacturer says these feathers are sourced from sustainable resources and are real feathers, we don't know exactly where they come from (the manufacturer says feathers undergo high-temperature sterilization to ensure their hygiene and safety). The rope, which is a thin wire that comes out from the wand, needs caution when in play so you don't accidentally hit your kitty. While we didn't test this wand toy, it's popular on Amazon, with over 9,000 four- and five-star ratings, so we think it's worth including on this list. Comes with a wand, eight replacement feathers, and two replacement ropes/wires FAQ Are wand toys good for cats? “Wand toys are some of the best toys out there for cats,” Joey Lusvardi, a certified cat behavior consultant, told The Spruce Pets. “They allow you to manipulate the toy in a way that imitates hunting and satisfies your cat’s natural urge to hunt. For cats, hunting is play and play is hunting.” In addition to stimulating your cat's hunting instincts, wand toys offer a way to bond with your cat that doesn't involve food. Unlike other cat toys, a wand requires your active involvement, so that your cat is interacting with you as much as the toy. Why do cats like wand toys? A wand toy with a lure stimulates your cat’s hunting instincts, allows you to interact with your cat in new ways, and is a fantastic exercise toy that can channel your cat’s energies away from more mischievous or destructive pursuits.“Wand toys may be simple to us, but to your cat, they resemble prey that they like to hunt,” Lusvardi told The Spruce Pets. “Unlike humans, cats don’t typically require fancy playthings to be content.” How do I get my cat to play with a wand toy? “The first thing you want to make sure of is that the toy is actually one that your specific cat enjoys,” Lusvardi said. “Move the toy parallel or away from the cat. You want to vary the speed of the toy, similar to how actual prey may move. Think of going faster at first, but slowing down or pausing. It may move faster again later, or it might begin to move erratically.”Enticing your cat with a wand toy can sometimes take a little patience, too. Place the lure close by and sit it still until your cat comes to explore, then pull it away—your cat's curiosity can only ignore it for so long. We've also found that cats respond as much to you as to the wand, watching you for cues about what you're going to do next with their new toy. Wand toys will be less effective if you're merely jiggling them while watching TV or otherwise distracted. Are feathers safe for cats? "Feathers can be safe as long as your cat doesn’t eat them,” Lusvardi said.Feather lures are particularly susceptible to wear and tear, and you can expect feathers to come loose over time. Wand toys aren't meant to be left out, and instead are best for closely supervised play sessions.Your cat may occasionally catch the lure and pull the whole toy out of your hand—a fitting reward for a successful hunt—but you'll want to take it away before they have a chance to chew a lure apart. Similarly, you should always pick up and dispose of feathers or other pieces of the lure that break off during play. Why Trust The Spruce Pets?
