Getting pet hair off your clothes, carpet, furniture, and out of your car can become an all-consuming challenge. But the right pet hair remover can make the job a lot simpler—you might even be able to wear that black shirt again.

We purchased 21 pet hair remover tools and tested them in our testing lab, evaluating their performance, design, and ease of use. We used each tool on chairs, clothing, pillowcases, and flooring that was covered in synthetic cat hair to see how each pet hair cleaner performed on a variety of surfaces. Where possible, we tested on real pet hair, using items that testers brought from home. Read on for our top picks.

What We Like
  • Doubles as a lint roller

  • More effective than a vacuum cleaner

  • Easy to empty

  • Reusable

What We Don't Like
  • Only one size

  • Some minor design flaws

The ChomChom Roller is a pet hair remover device that combines the easy and intuitive operation of a classic roller with the effectiveness of a reusable lint roller. And unlike a traditional lint roller, there’s no need to stop and remove a sticky sheet every few swipes. Plus, it's 7.5 inches wide, so you can cover large areas fairly quickly.

The T-shaped tool has a solid but comfortable plastic handle and a hooded roller with a textured fabric brush pad on one side and a fur collection compartment on the other. To use, just roll the tool over a surface with pet hair on it, then flip open the collection compartment to take out the hair you’ve just removed.

A word of advice: you’ll want to get into the habit of cleaning out the fur reservoir after each use so it doesn’t build up and cause the tool to jam.

We like that you can reuse this tool over and over without creating waste, and that the manual operation doesn’t require electricity. Most flaws are minor, like how the placement of the button you push to empty the fur compartment makes it easy to accidentally push while you’re using the roller.

We found it works best on upholstery but is also suitable for clothing, blankets, and jackets. Keep in mind that it works better on items that are taut, so if you want to use it on clothes or bedding, hold the item tight while using it.

We also wrote a longer review if you’d like to learn more about the ChomChom.

Dimensions: 2.5 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches | Material: Plastic, nylon

What We Like
  • Works on any fabric

  • Double-sided for longer life

  • Eco-friendly

What We Don't Like
  • Can damage some material

  • Can be annoying to clean

This classic lint-removing brush works great at removing pet hair from clothes with just a few quick one-way swipes. We like that it offers an eco-friendly alternative to the sticky-sheeted roller tool and that it can be reused many, many times. To remove collected pet hair, you simply swipe the brush pad against something in the opposite direction.

Although the lint-removing material is soft, it has a roughness to it when you rub your finger across it. This traction is how the brush picks up pet hair and lint from fabrics, and it’s also why it’s best not to use the brush on wispy or non-knitted fabrics, as they may catch, pull, or become pilled. The short hairs and tight weave of the lint-removing material can also cause a buildup of smaller lint and dust particles that can be difficult to completely clean off the brush pad, especially once wet or exposed to the oils in your fingers.

Dimensions: 1.2 x 2.4 x 9.3 inches | Material: Plastic, woven fabric

What We Like
  • Removes unseen hair and debris

  • Works better than a vacuum

  • Reusable as is

  • Lightweight and travel-friendly

  • Patent-pending design

What We Don't Like
  • May damage some fabrics

  • Labor-intensive

We’ve found that the Uproot Clean Pro Pet Hair Remover often works better than a vacuum to remove pet hair and debris. This handheld device has a patent-pending design that uses two micro-serrated metal bars to lift deep-rooted pet hair and debris from most fabric fibers instantly. During testing, we were consistently shocked at how much material this tool managed to pull up—pet hair, litter, and dirt—even when the surface looked clean and pet hair-free to start.

It’s lightweight and portable, making it easy to carry between rooms or even out to the car. It works amazingly on carpets and rugs, pet furniture and beds, human furniture, and car interiors, but please note that it’s not meant to be used on smooth, non-knitted materials like leather. Because you’ll need to use a scraping and raking movement to catch the pet hair, it may damage delicate or knotted upholstery.

Dimensions: 0.37 x 6.6 x 5 inches | Material: Plastic, metal

What We Like
  • Great for all hair types

  • Reusable as is

  • Works on almost all floor types

  • Adjustable handle length

What We Don't Like
  • Very labor-intensive

  • Won’t pick up debris or dirt

The Furemover Broom is what you’d get if a rake, broom, and squeegee had a baby that grew up to become a rough-and-tough pet hair remover for nearly all floor and pet hair types. Essentially, this double-sided pet hair removal tool features a rubber-toothed broom and a rubber squeegee-like side that uses friction to attract, uproot, and collect pet hair from carpet, tile, concrete, and linoleum floors. Truth be told, the broom side can be a little too disruptive, tossing debris and hair into the air, but we found the squeegee side to be where the magic is, at least for shorter carpets and hard floors.

As a bonus, the plastic handle is adjustable between 36 to 60 inches in height, making it comfortable to use for taller people. Tall or short, everyone should be prepared to put in a bit of muscle for this broom to do its thing, and you’ll want to follow up with a vacuum to capture all the dirt and debris left over. Use it with a dog doormat to catch dirt before it gets in, and your house will be spotless.

Dimensions: 2.5 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches | Material: Plastic, nylon

What We Like
  • Compact, travel-friendly size

  • Grabs deep-rooted hair

  • Ergonomic handheld design

  • Three serration sizes

  • Perfect for small surfaces

What We Don't Like
  • Labor-intensive

  • Not for large area coverage

The Analan Mini Pet Hair Detailer is a convenient and compact handheld pet removal tool that offers great control during use and effectively grabs pet hair off fabrics. The triangle shape features serrated edges of different sizes on each side, letting you pick the best size of serration for the type and texture of the hair you’re trying to capture—a rare and valuable part of the overall design.

Additionally, the ergonomic shape fits comfortably in the palm of most adult hands, helping to alleviate some of the labor involved in using the tool. We also like that you can wedge the corners into furniture crevices to help dislodge accumulated tufts of pet hair. Since this is a small and detail-focused tool, it’s not ideal for removing pet hair from larger areas like rugs or couches.

Dimensions: 4.72 x 4.72 x 0.78 inches | Material: Plastic, rubber

What We Like
  • Refillable

  • Extra sticky surface

  • Picks up long hair

  • Lightweight

What We Don't Like
  • Not very eco-friendly

  • Difficult to remove sheets

Every pet owner faced with the task of removing pet hair has likely tried some version of a sticky-sheeted roller. We feel your pain, and that’s why we recommend the Evercare Pet Lint Roller Extreme Stick Plus.

While it may look like your typical pet hair roller, these sheets are extra sticky and pick up a decent amount of hair in a single swipe. We also like that the roller picks up long hair and that you can buy a pack of three (though the refill rollers only have 60 sheets, vs. 100 for the new product).

The plastic handle is decently sturdy and has an ergonomic shape, which we appreciate when working on surfaces practically coated in pet hair. The refillable sheets are a convenient way to start from maximum stickiness over and over, but we wish they were at least made from a recyclable material. Also, one downside to the extra stickiness of the sheets is that it can sometimes be hard to rip off the used roller sheet.

Dimensions: 10.28 x 5.43 x 4.76 inches | Material: Plastic

What We Like
  • Lightweight and disposable

  • Very effective for softer hair and fur

  • Removes pet dander and other allergens

  • Works on other hard surfaces

What We Don't Like
  • Needs to be used with a Swiffer dry mop

  • Less effective with coarse hair

The Swiffer Sweeper Pet Heavy Duty Dry Sweeping Cloths are made for use with a standard Swiffer dry mop and feature a fluffier surface texture made from over 30,000 3D fibers with an overall look and feel similar to loose cotton balls. This texture is highly effective at trapping and picking up errant pet hair (particularly soft undercoat hairs), dust bunnies, and other lightweight debris from smooth floors and surfaces.

We also appreciate that each sweeping pad has a very light Febreeze scent that helps to neutralize any lingering pet odors. In addition to pet hair, these sheets are also effective at picking up dust and 98 percent of pet dander allergens, making them a great resource for pet owners with allergies.

We’ve also used these dry sweeping cloths for quick wipe-downs of furniture with hard surfaces, like bookshelves, tables, and counters. These sheets work best at catching softer textured pet hair and may not work as effectively for coarser types of hair.

Dimensions: 0.3 x 7.8 inches | Material: 3D synthetic fibers

What We Like
  • Shortens dry time of laundry

  • Natural fabric softener

  • Easy to maintain

What We Don't Like
  • Not best for delicates

Dryer balls are an easy way to remove pet hair from clothes, sheets, blankets, or anything you’re already throwing in the wash. These dryer balls by Smart Sheep are impressively effective at removing pet hair, even from full and large loads. They work by adding extra air circulation to your dryer cycle, which, in turn, removes static, shortens dry times, and pulls off pet hair and whatever else may be clinging to fabrics.

We particularly like these dryer balls for removing pet hair from pet blankets, pet beds, and clothing. Plus, they last for up to 1,000 washes before needing to be replaced, and they act like a natural fabric softener, cutting down on overall costs and chemicals. However, wool dryer balls work best on natural fiber fabrics.

They aren’t recommended for delicate or thin, synthetic materials like spandex, which can pill or become damaged by dryer balls. Each order comes with six balls, and there are options for plain white or three cute animal designs.

Dimensions: 7.8 x 7 x 2.8 inches | Material: New Zealand wool

What We Like
  • Great for deep cleaning

  • Multi-surface tools

  • Finger strap on wide detailer

What We Don't Like
  • Awkwardly long handle on crevice tool

Cleaning and detailing a car's interior is already a hassle, and it can be an even bigger project if you have furry passengers. This pro detailing kit by the Lilly Brush store makes removing pet hair from your car completely hassle-free. The wide detailer tool allows you to quickly swipe pet hair off of seats and floor mats.

The finger strap also gives you added security while working and makes it more comfortable to grip the tool. The detailer tool has both rounded and sharp corners, so it works across multiple surface types and angles.

The crevice tool in this kit is great for those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies between and under seats. It has an extra-long 14-inch handle, so you can reach deep into cracks. Similar to the Lilly Brush Mini Pet Hair Detailer, this tool is easy to wipe off with a damp cloth if there are hairs stuck on the rubber.

Dimensions: 15.75 x 6 x 0.75 inches | Material: Plastic, rubber

What We Like
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides 25 minutes of powerful suction

  • Silicone fins keep pet hair from wrapping around roller

  • Easy to empty

  • Lightweight

What We Don't Like
  • Docking station sold separately

Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ Cordless Handheld Vacuum provides 25 minutes of cordless suction to help you clean up after your pet in various spaces, such as the inside of a car. It weighs less than 3 pounds, contributing to its portability.

During our tests, it effectively picked up kibble and wet hair from hardwood surfaces, though it took an additional pass to achieve this on carpeting—not uncommon for other handheld vacuum cleaners we tested. We were impressed by how well the silicone fins on the pet power brush attachment kept pet hair from wrapping around the roller. The included crevice tool cleans between cushions, and the scrubbing brush picks up dirt and debris from upholstery.

While the canister easily emptied into the trash with the CleanTouch dirt ejector, we still had to reach in and wipe away stuck wet hair to clean it out completely. We like the fact that it comes with a washable filter, a power cord, and a 2-year warranty. However, the docking station must be purchased separately.

Dimensions: 20.8 x 3.8 x 4.3 inches | Material: N/A

What We Like
  • Rounded edges

  • Palm-sized

  • Picks up large amount of hair

What We Don't Like
  • Not best for clothing

If you frequently travel with your dog in the car or even on planes, this tiny pet hair detailer by the Lilly Brush Store is a great tool to have with you. This detailer can also be clipped to a keychain, so you never leave home without it.

Its simple, yet effective design allows for easy cleaning of tight corners and broad swaths of fabric. Although this detailer was great on taut fabric, such as upholstery, we would not recommend it for removing hair from clothing.

In our testing, the detailer picked up a large amount of hair after just one swipe and balled it up neatly. Although it's recommended that you clean this tool with a damp cloth, we found it effective to rinse it in a sink if there are some stubborn hairs stuck on the rubber.

We recognize that this tool's small size does require more effort for cleaning large areas, but for quick, everyday messes, we think it's more than sufficient. Whether you need to quickly clean upholstery in a rental home or wipe off your car's upholstery, this tool is a great on-the-go option.

What We Like
  • Works on multiple surfaces

  • Also removes loose hair on cats and dogs

  • Covers large surface area

  • Easy to clean

What We Don't Like
  • Doesn't effectively remove short hairs

  • Awkward to use for small hands

Pet hair removal mitts or gloves using static electric technology have gained viral popularity as an eco-friendly, reusable option to traditional sticky paper lint rollers. Although we didn't test this pet hair removal glove from Salhap, it's a top-rated pick at Amazon, with over 10,000 sold in the past month, so it's worth including in our list.

The glove-like design fits comfortably around the hand and is constructed of a breathable, flexible mesh fabric that allows it to generate static electricity as you move it across surfaces, allowing pet hair to collect on tiny dual-directional bristles for easy removal. You can use it to remove pet hair on multiple surfaces, such as rugs, clothes, and upholstery—even to remove loose top coat directly off your cat or dog; however, some reviewers report that it's not as effective on short-hair dogs.

Measuring 9.5 x 6.69 inches, the glove covers a large surface area. But for those with small hands, it may be difficult to get a good grip while keeping the glove flat against the surface. Overall, most users find it easy to use and clean; simply peel off the collected hair and run the glove under water.

Dimensions: 9.5 x 6.69 inches | Material: Polyester

Final Verdict

Our best overall pet hair remover pick is the ChomChom Roller, a handheld roller that uses an electrostatic charge to attract and pick up pet hair. This is a reusable roller option that doesn’t require electricity to use. When it comes to electric-powered pet hair removers, we recommend the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ Handheld Vacuum, which is lightweight yet provides powerful portable suction to help you clean a variety of spaces.

How We Tested the Pet Hair Removers

After purchasing 21 pet hair remover tools, we tested them in The Lab in Brooklyn, New York, to evaluate their performance, design, and ease of use. A group of volunteer testers used these products on chairs, clothing, pillowcases, and flooring covered in synthetic hair to see which surfaces they were most effective on and which surfaces they didn't clean at all. Some of our testers brought in slipcovers with real pet hair from their homes.

Each tester was asked to rate their product on a scale of 1 to 5 based on its performance in each of the tested categories. For products that were specific to laundry, we also had a washer and dryer on site.

To test the design of each product, testers used the product on the surface that it's described to be best for and considered its comfort of use. While testing each product's effectiveness, we asked our testers to consider whether it took multiple passes to pick up all of the hair on an item, or if the product easily picked up all hair without issue.

Lastly, we asked our testers to clean the products as directed and consider how efficient cleaning the product would be in a typical household. To further enhance our testing insights, we asked testers to also consider whether they'd use the product in their own home, if they'd recommend the product to a friend, and how the product could best be used.

What to Look For in a Pet Hair Remover

Tips for Removing Pet Hair

  • Clean for pet hair frequently: Pet hair accumulates quickly and is much more manageable to clean before it becomes a thick layer on any surface. Frequent cleaning to remove pet hair is the best way to keep your clothes and house as free as possible of pet hair.
  • Remove, don’t rustle: When possible, avoid removal methods that require you to disrupt pet hair in a way that will kick it up into the air, like beating out a rug. This is messy and ineffective and will cause pet hair to resettle elsewhere. Plus, it releases debris, dirt, and dander into the air.
  • Vacuum carpeted spaces often: Pet hair can easily hide in carpet fibers, and using a vacuum to suck up any hidden hair will prevent hair from becoming deeply rooted into the carpet fibers and remove any hair on the surface that could otherwise transfer to your clothing.
  • Opt for dry removal methods: While we often use water, sometimes with soap, to remove dirt, attempts at removing pet hair should almost always be done without water. Wet hair clumps, making it harder to remove, especially if the area also contains debris or dirt. Wet dog hair specifically can also release an odor that is hard to get rid of.
  • Stop it before it starts: Incorporating other pet hair management products into your routine can drastically help reduce the amount of hair your pet has to shed onto your furniture, floors, and clothes. Using a dog or cat brush to regularly groom your pet will grab loose pet hair while it’s still on your pet. Air purifiers are also a great way to catch errant pet hair, especially undercoats. As a bonus, they also trap and remove dust, dander, and other allergens from the air. You can also try to bathe your pet with a deshedding shampoo

Economical and Environmentally Friendly Features

When shopping for a pet hair remover, try to find a good balance between value and eco-friendly features. Consider how many times you’ll be able to reuse a pet remover product, how much waste it creates, how easy it is to find replacement parts, how much electricity it uses, and how eco-friendly, biodegradable, and toxic the materials are that are used to make the product.

FAQ
  • Do dryer sheets remove pet hair?

Dryer sheets do not directly remove pet hair, but tossing a dryer sheet into your laundry’s dryer cycle will help reduce static, which, in turn, will reduce the likelihood of pet hair sticking to your clothes once they are removed from the dryer.

  • How do I get rid of static cling that attracts pet hair to clothes?

Aside from dryer sheets, fabric softener also reduces static buildup. You can also use a damp cloth or spray to add moisture to your clothes, and use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Rubbing metal or aluminum foil on your clothing can help transfer the electrostatic charge.
