Dogs sleep a lot. Maybe your pup sleeps on your bed, but there’s a good chance there’s a dog bed (or two) somewhere in your house.

“Beds give dogs comfort and security,” says certified trainer and behaviorist Susie Aga, owner of Atlanta Dog Trainer. “Some dogs get very hot and like to lay on hearths or elevated beds. Some have orthopedic issues and their joints and bones hurt.”

There are all kinds of beds for all kinds of dogs – cuddly donuts, thick memory foam couches, and flat cushy beds for sprawling. We tested dozens of them to find the very best. Our favorite dog bed for big dogs is the KOPEKS Orthopedic Bed. It has a plush suede cover and lots of support from 7 inches of thick memory foam.

Why I'm The Expert

I’m Mary Jo, a freelance writer for The Spruce Pets. I’ve fostered 70 puppies and dogs and have gone through so many dog beds! My puppy room alone has at least a half dozen dog beds including an elevated bed, flat crate beds, and two donuts. My very favorite beds are the Cozy Cuddler Pet Bed and the Original Calming Donut from Best Friends By Sheri. I have these plush, machine washable beds in a couple of sizes including one that puppies just love to burrow in. My own rescue dog, a 10-year-old border collie mix, never really liked beds until he had knee surgery. Now, he seeks out the Best Friends By Sheri Original Cozy Cuddler and just sinks into its plushy softness

What We Like
  • Hypoallergenic

  • Lots of support from 7 inches of memory foam

  • Plush suede cover

What We Don't Like
  • More expensive than some

For a big dog, you want loads of support, a large surface area, comfort, and serious durability. Our tester’s two large dogs just melted into this KOPEKS Orthopedic Bed. The bed is supportive, but has soft, fluffy sides for comfort. Both dogs (90-plus pounds each) can sleep in this bed together. The bed is easy to wipe clean, even if you have droolers or shedders.

The support comes from seven inches of thick memory foam and there’s a three-inch headrest on one end. That gives them one spot to lay their head while they sprawl on the rest of the bed. The memory foam material is great on joints and perfect for senior dogs. There’s also a waterproof inner protector and a plush suede zipper cover to keep everything inside from getting wet or damaged.

The bed is more expensive than some, but our tester said it was far and away the best bed she’s ever used for her two large dogs. They gravitated towards it almost immediately. The manufacturer says it can take up to 72 hours for the bed to completely puff up and get to full size as the foam expands, but we found it took only about 12.

Dimensions: 35 x 28 x 5.5 (large) | Materials: Suede, fabric, orthopedic foam | Colors: Brown, gray

What We Like
  • Chew proof

  • Water-resistant

  • Non-skid bottom

  • Washable, removable cover

What We Don't Like
  • More expensive than other beds on our list

K9 Ballistics offers a wide array of dog beds, from options for smaller dogs to those that cover the bottom of a crate. But our favorite is the K9 Ballistics Tough Orthopedic Bed that can handle heavy chewers and biters. It stood up to a lot of jumping from our tester dogs and seems like it is build to last.

The mattress is firm but soft and is made of thick orthopedic foam that easily bounces back. The bed itself is water-resistant and comes with a waterproof, machine-washable cover for dogs that might slobber or leave larger messes where they lie.

The zipper on the cover is hidden away with a Velcro flap. The cover can be a little difficult to take on and off, but it’s very easy to spot clean or machine wash. The bottom of the bed is non-skid to keep it from sliding around or getting dragged around a room.

Dimensions: 33 x 27 x 5 inches | Materials: Orthopedic foam, polyester | Colors: Blue, gray, black, sandstone

What We Like
  • Removable machine-washable cover

  • Contours to your dog

  • Offers back, hip, and head support

  • Orthopedic or cooling options

What We Don't Like
  • Not waterproof

Finding a great bed for your large dog doesn’t have to be expensive. The simple but supportive Furhaven Ultra Plush Luxe Orthopedic Lounger offers a great bed in many sizes, all the way up to jumbo plus. The contoured design provides back, hip, and head support and is available in orthopedic and cooling options. The sloping sides of the bed allow your dog to rest their head comfortably and the medical-grade foam is firm but forgiving, bouncing back quickly when your dog gets up.

The bed has a soft, sherpa-like covering that won’t cause your pup to overheat, making it a great choice for furry friends, even in summer. The cover slips off and is easy to clean, but the bed itself is not waterproof. The bed comes in several colors and the sleek design fits in with most decor.

Dimensions: 36 x 24 x 5.5 (large) | Materials: Polyester, synthetic fabric  | Colors: Cream, chocolate, gray

What We Like
  • Huge

  • Firm with soft sides

  • Washable cover

  • Comes in four colors

What We Don't Like
  • Replacing the cover can be challenging

The L.L. Bean Therapeutic Dog Bed Couch is a supportive, good-looking sofa for your pup. Made with three bolstered sides, the durable denim-like material is stuffed with a strong, but soft, memory foam insert. The bed comes in several sizes but the extra large is massive, measuring 52 x 42 inches. It fits two large dogs with plenty of room to sprawl. This is not a dog bed for a tiny apartment!

The soft sides make it easy for a dog to burrow and snuggle. Our tester dogs absolutely loved this bed. They used it daily for weeks on end and they played, napped, and snacked on it. There is some assembly required as the cover has to be fitted around the insert. It was a little challenging, but the result looked good. The cover can be removed for washing and drying and holds up well to cleaning.

Dimensions: 52 x 42 x 13.5 inches (extra-large) | Materials: Cotton, polyester, polyeuthrane | Colors: Burlap, khaki, platinum, indigo

What We Like
  • Soft and fluffy faux fur

  • Thick memory foam for support

  • Six colors

  • Plenty of room to sprawl

What We Don't Like
  • Cover has to air-dry

For dogs that don’t like to curl up when they sleep, the Paw PupRug Faux Fur Orthopedic Dog Bed has loads of room for sprawling. The giant size is an impressive five feet wide and is covered with soft and fluffy faux fur. Inside is a thick memory foam pad for solid support.

The dog bed comes in six colors including gray, black, and brown. It’s meant to look like a shaggy rug so it blends in with your usual decor. But when your dog stretches out, the bed has firm but comfortable support. The cover slips off and can be machine washed, but it must be air dried, which can take a little time.

Dimensions: 60 x 35 inches (giant) | Materials: Faux fur, memory foam | Colors: Six colors

What We Like
  • Easy to wipe clean

  • Sturdy and comfortable

  • Helps regulate body temperature

What We Don't Like
  • Some assembly required

It can be hard to find an elevated bed for large dogs that’s both sturdy and comfortable. We like the Fuhaven Elevated Pet Bed Cot because it is both. The strong metal frame offers stability, while the mesh sling bed has some give, providing the perfect amount of flexibility and comfort. The largest size is more than 4.5 feet long which should be plenty big for even the largest pups.

An elevated cooling bed provides consistent firm support and also helps your dog regulate their body temperature by keeping them off a cold floor and allowing air to circulate underneath them. The elevation isn’t very high, so it’s easy to climb, even for senior dogs with arthritic joints. The bed is easy to clean with a damp cloth and comes in four colors.

Dimensions: 54.5 x 36 x 8 inches | Materials: Plastic, nylon, metal | Colors: Blue, gray, terracotta red, gecko green

What We Like
  • Comfortable and sturdy

  • Washable cover

  • Supportive bolster

  • Four colors

What We Don't Like
  • Not waterproof

When dogs get older, comfortable and supportive beds can be really important to ease achy joints.

The Serta Orthopedic Couch Dog Bed is supportive but cushy, offering just enough give for a soft nap while still providing neck and head support with soft and strong bolsters. It’s low to the ground, so an aging pup won’t have to climb up or down too much. This attractive bed comes in four colors and several sizes, including the extra large which is nearly 4-feet long. Our tester dogs liked to spread out and loll on it and there was plenty of room.

The cover is easy to remove and is machine washable, but the bed is not waterproof and the memory foam can’t be washed. Keep that in mind if your senior is prone to accidents.

Dimensions: 46 x 34 x 9.5 inches (extra large) | Materials: Polyester, polyurethane foam | Colors: Blue, gray, mocha, tan

What We Like
  • Machine washable

  • Super soft fabric

  • Sized for crates

  • Non-slip bottom

What We Don't Like
  • Wish it had a little more padding

If your dog spends time in a crate, it can be nice to have a bed in there with them. But round beds or overstuffed ones can be awkward in that rectangle space. The KSIIA Deluxe Plus Dog Crate Bed is incredibly soft and comes in sizes to match standard crates. The largest is 53 x 36 inches which fits the largest standard crate, but it comes in other sizes if your dog has a smaller hangout.

The bed has a velvet surface that doesn’t shed. It’s machine washable and bounces back very well after cleaning. It’s a tear-resistant fabric and has a skid-resistant backing to keep it from sliding in the crate or out on the floor. Because it’s so silky soft, it’s appealing to dogs who love to snuggle in blankets. Our only wish is that it had a little bit more padding inside.

Dimensions: 53 x 36 x 4 inches | Materials: Polyester, velvet | Colors: Light gray, brown, dark gray, pink

What We Like
  • So cuddly and soft

  • Cover acts like a blanket

  • Four colors

  • Machine-washable

What We Don't Like
  • Not for huge dogs

Soft donut beds are great for dogs that like to curl up and snuggle. The Best Friends by Sheri Cozy Cuddler Covered Bed is a cuddler’s dream. It has a plush, soft covering and supportive bolsters, so a dog can just sink into the comfy center while supporting their head and neck on the sides.

This particular cuddler also has a covering that acts like a blanket. I’ve had puppies that disappear underneath it at nap time, tucked away and sleeping soundly. The bed is machine washable and comes out looking great. It comes in four colors and two sizes. Heads up that the “jumbo” isn’t incredibly big (27 x 8 inches), but sometimes the biggest dogs love to snuggle up in a smaller bed.

We also really like the Best Friends by Sheri Original Calming Donut Bed, which doesn’t have the extra blanket but comes in many more sizes, that might be more comfortable for larger dogs with the addition of a dog blanket. Although I have two of these in my house and my largest adult dog will often seek out the smaller, Cozy Cuddler Covered Bed and curl up in there.

Dimensions: 27 x 8 inches | Materials: Sherpa, nylon, synthetic fabric | Colors: Dark chocolate, gray, tide pool, wheat

Final Verdict

Our favorite dog bed for big dogs is the KOPEKS Orthopedic Bed. It has a plush suede cover and lots of support from 7 inches of thick memory foam. For dogs that get hot easily or for a place to hang in summer, we like the Furhaven Elevated Pet Bed Cot which is sturdy and comfortable and helps regulate your pup’s body temperature.

How We Picked Dog Beds

We have conducted four rounds of dog bed testing, totaling 68 dog beds across a wide range of uses, including elevated cooling beds and orthopedic beds designed for dogs with limited mobility.

While we've tested hundreds of pet products in our New York testing lab, the best way to evaluate dog beds is with real dogs, so we shipped each dog bed out to a volunteer home for extensive testing. We developed a methodology to guide our volunteer dog parents through a series of observations, telling us in detail about a dog bed's quality, durability, and how easy they are to clean.

Each initial round of testing last for several weeks, after which we check in with our testers and their dogs to see how much they're enjoying the dog bed. Each household has at least one dog, but several testers have two or three dogs that are all welcome and encouraged to try out the beds. Testers who enjoy having the dog bed in their home continue to provide feedback with check-ins at the three month and six month mark to report back on quality, support, size, value, comfort, and ease of cleaning.

We also considered dog beds that we have tested in the past that might not have been considered for large dogs, but do come in large sizes and were favorably reviewed by other sized dog participants. Using all this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks.

What to Look for in Dog Beds for Big Dogs

Type

When buying a dog bed, there are multiple different types available with each having its strengths and weaknesses. For example, orthopedic beds use a certain foam that is good for your animal's joints but can be a bit expensive.

Here are just a few of the types.

  • Cooling
  • Bolstered
  • Sofa
  • Crate
  • Mat
  • Orthopedic

Foam

Big dogs require a certain amount of support to help keep their joints from hurting as they age. According to Dr. Osborne, “memory foam is ideal for many dog beds” especially if they suffer “from aches and pains, arthritis, as well as hip and spinal issues.” Do keep in mind that some foams can contain toxic materials if ingested, so they can be dangerous to big chewers. For dogs that are also prone to skin and allergy issues, a hypoallergenic choice like NIGHT's Silk Pet Bed could be a good option.

Chewing

If your dog is an aggressive chewer, Dr. Osborne recommends getting a dog bed for chewers with a “written guarantee against damage due to chewing.” Eating foam or plastic could potentially lead to health problems, so its best to keep an eye on your dog that you think is going to chew through its bed. Owners of chewers often find replacement dog bed covers helpful.

FAQ
  • How big should my dog’s bed be?

Whether you're choosing a sofa dog bed or a raised one, the bed should be large enough for them to sit up and lie down easily.
