Cat play tunnels are among the most popular toys for cats. Their natural predator and prey instincts are unleashed through play and exercise, and offering your cat a stimulating outlet, like a play tunnel, can even help prevent destructive behaviors like scratching, chewing, and spraying.

Our favorite cat tunnels are collapsible, made from durable materials, and roomy enough for two cats or more. Our favorite is the interactive Kong Play Spaces Rave Cave because it's easy to set up and is designed with multi-sensory features. Depending on your space, you might like another play tunnel that made our list, all of which will stimulate mental and physical activity for your cat.

What We Like
  • Very easy to set up

  • Comes with batteries pre-installed

  • Durable material

  • Engaging lights and sounds

What We Don't Like
  • Control function for the lights and music can a bit confusing

The Kong Play Space Rave Cave is a multi-sensory interactive cat tunnel featuring a crinkle floor, catnip treat, disco ball, motion-activated flashing lights, and '90s techno music, designed to fully engage active cats and kittens. The foldable tunnel is very easy to set up and store and comes with batteries already installed to control the lights and sound.

During the testing period, the overall structure remained remarkably intact after weeks of batting, stalking, and pouncing by six energetic foster kittens, sustaining only one minor casualty. Our tester found the polyvinyl tent-like material durable enough to withstand all their clawing and biting.

The only confusing components seemed to be the flashing lights and music. "The ability to set it off with motion seemed hit or miss and it was hard to tell how many times the button was pushed and what 'stage' the tunnel was currently set to," commented our tester. And, based on our tester's observations, it's up for debate whether the lights and sounds are more appealing to the cats or the humans interacting with them.

For energetic cats, such as our tester's kittens, who love playing in tunnels, this option offers a fun twist on the standard model. Plus. the reasonable price and included features make this cat tunnel a worthwhile purchase.

Tunnel Diameter: 11.75 inches | Dimensions: 3.25 x 11.75 x 11.75 inches | Material: Plastic | Colors: Multi-colored | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Collapsible design for easy storage

  • Available in three shapes: S, Y, and circle

  • Made of durable faux fur material

  • Suitable for cats of all ages up to 35 pounds

What We Don't Like
  • Only comes in gray

The PAWZ Road Collapsible Cat Tunnel comes in three malleable and collapsible shapes—S, Y, and a circle. All three versions of the tunnel have a diameter close to 10 inches, are equipped with peepholes, and are made with durable faux suede material that is comfortable and soft to the touch. Plus, each tunnel opening has a dangling toy for additional intrigue, but if your cat is very determined, this feature might soon be detached.

The S-shape will take up the least amount of floor space, and it can also be connected with other PAWZ Road Collapsible Cat Tunnels. The three-way Y shape works well for hide and seek with a peek-a-boo opening in the middle and is suitable for multiple cats. If you have a cat that enjoys running in circles, the circle shape can serve as a track and even has a padded bed in the middle where they can relax after expending all their energy.

The sprung steel frame allows for easy assembly and breakdown. Simply fasten the attached clips and stow them away for the next time your cat is in the mood to play.

Tunnel Diameter: 10.5 inches | Dimensions: 46 x 10.5 x 10.5 inches (s); 31.5 x 31.5 x 10.63 inches (y) 38 x 38 x 9.5 inches (circle) | Material: Faux fur, steel | Colors: Gray | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Durable

  • Easy to clean

  • Also meets child safety standards

What We Don't Like
  • Sound-sensitive cats don’t like the crinkle

The SmartyKat Crackle Chute Collapsible Tunnel is lightweight, durable, and collapsible, but what really sets apart is its crackling, crinkling texture that drives cats wild. They’ll play peek-a-boo with you, the kids, or other cats and dogs through the side opening.

Plus it's collapsible, so it can be stored away easily when playtime is over. It’s just the right size for that afternoon nap and is also safe for kittens and seniors.

The polyester fabric is stain-, odor-, and snag-resistant and easy to spot clean or hose off. SmartyKat uses recycled, reclaimed, organic, and sustainable materials in their products. This tunnel has a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) liner made of recycled plastic water bottles. Manufacturer Worldwise even designs and tests their pet products to also meet child safety standards.

There are some minor downsides. This tunnel diameter is on the small side at 9.5 inches, so if you have a Maine coon, ragdoll, or other large cat breed, this tunnel might be a little too snug. It is also only available in one color combination: tan and cranberry.

Tunnel Diameter: 9.5 inches | Dimensions: 35 x 9.5 x 9.5 inches | Material: Polyester fabric, PET liner, steel wire | Colors: Tan/cranberry | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Neutral translucent white color blends with most home decor

  • Stores flat

  • Part of a line of accessories

What We Don't Like
  • White can show stains

  • The pom-pom likes to rest on the floor

If you're looking for a play tunnel in a neutral color, Ikea's Lurvig Tunnel is the one for you. The white polyester fabric (made with a minimum of 90 percent recycled materials) blends in with almost any home decor style and it's translucent, so you can actually watch your cat having fun.

Your cat will love the enticing pink plush ball that dangles in the opening at one end. And due to the semitransparent fabric, your cat can see shadows through the tunnel, making playtime even more interesting. Once your cat is done for the day, the tunnel folds flat and secures with hook and loop tabs (Velcro) for easy storage.

Ikea’s Lurvig line includes a range of color-coordinated accessories for pets that can be purchased separately to enhance your living room or play den. For instance, you can choose a cat house cube in black or white geometric print, with or without a cushion.

Tunnel Diameter: 9.75 inches | Dimensions: 50.5 x 9.75 inches | Material: Polyester, steel | Colors: White | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Durable, snag-resistant fabric

  • Padded cushion included

  • Accordion design for easy storage

What We Don't Like
  • A squeeze for larger cats

The Catit Vesper Cat Tunnel is a C-shaped tunnel with a padded mat in the middle where a cat can relax and recharge. The cozy circle-shaped bed detaches from the crescent-shaped tunnel for cleaning and has a removable cover that is machine washable. On the opposite side from where the bed attaches, the tunnel has a peephole with a dangling plush ball.

The versatile tunnel has an accordion-style frame for easy storage, and it can be combined with another C-shaped Vesper Cat Tunnel from Catit to form a full circle. Catit also sells a rocket or castle that can attach to one end of the tunnel for added play space.

The diameter is 11 inches, which is fine for most cats but might be a tight squeeze for bigger cats.

Tunnel Diameter: 11 inches | Dimensions: 26.8 x 38.2 x 11 inches | Material: Polyester fabric | Colors: Blue/gray | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Soft

  • Lightweight

  • Doesn't trap odors

  • Large tunnel

What We Don't Like
  • Can slide around on uncarpeted floors

  • Bed is thin

Designed in the same versatile style as the Catit Vesper, there are two entry points to this circular tunnel. An attached cushion is included to make it a tunnel/bed combo, or unzipped to convert to a C-shape around the cushion. It's easy to assemble and comes together in just a few minutes.

Our tester's two cats loved the spacious tunnel and couldn't resist chasing each other in circles—the hanging plush catnip ball added to their enjoyment. However, our tester thought a plusher, thicker cushion would've made it a much more inviting bed. While the full cat bed is quite large, it is lightweight enough to move around effortlessly, though it can also slide around a little on uncarpeted floors during rough play.

It comes in three neutral colors and a red-blue plaid so you have options should you want to match your living area. The fabric holds up well to rigorous use and doesn't seem to trap odors.

Tunnel Diameter: 12.5 inches | Dimensions: 39 x 39 x 12.5 inches | Material: Polyester fabric, cushion filling | Colors: White/gray, gray, brown pattern, red/blue plaid | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Tear-resistant fabric

  • Spring-steel frame

  • Durable

What We Don't Like
  • Diameter is a little small for cats over 15 pounds

  • Wire can pierce fabric with enough wear

A single straight tunnel might not be enough if you have multiple cats that like to play together. This tunnel will have them playing hide-and-seek and chase for hours because it has five tunnels that radiate (either 15.7 or 20.8 inches) from a single center that also has a top hole that they can pop out of like a jack-in-the-box. They’ll also love playing with the bell and ball that hangs in the center.

The tear-resistant 190T polyester taffeta is stain and odor-resistant and can be spot-cleaned, hand-washed, or sprayed with the hose. The dark fabric and multiple entrances make it an excellent place to hide or nap. Pawaboo also offers similar three-way, four-way, and S-shaped tunnels that can be attached to this one to create an even larger maze.

Tunnel Diameter: 9.9 inches | Dimensions: 15.7 (each "arm") x 9.9 or 20.8 (each "arm") x 9.9 inches | Material: Polyester taffeta fabric, alloy steel frame | Colors: Black/blue | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Portable and lightweight

  • Lots of space

  • Stain-resistant

  • Easy to clean

What We Don't Like
  • Can be hard to align pieces to zip tight

  • Poles could be more durable

If you want your cat to safely spend time outside without worrying about them escaping or getting into trouble, then a catio or cat tent offers a great solution. Made of semi-transparent polyester mesh for complete visibility, this cat play tunnel/tent combo provides 30 square feet of floor space to give your cat plenty of real outdoor time to explore and laze around.

In addition to the tent and tunnel, this set includes pegs and built-in fillable sandbags to stabilize the tent, as well as a small shoulder carry bag. The whole unit weighs just 7 pounds.

The tunnel has zippered doors at each end where it attaches to the tent. Each piece can be used separately, and each piece can also be purchased separately.

While the tent and tunnel components are made of durable materials and seem sturdy, our tester found it somewhat difficult to perfectly align the pieces to zip them up securely, taking several attempts to get it right. However, aside from the zipper issue, this set is fairly simple to assemble, break down, and store.

Tunnel Diameter: 17 inches | Dimensions: 74 x 63 x 36 inches, 62-inch tunnel | Material: Polyester mesh | Colors: Black | Collapsible: Yes

What We Like
  • Convertible to three different configurations

  • Glows for three to five hours

  • Well made

  • Easy to collapse

What We Don't Like
  • Metal frame could be stronger

This might be one of the only glow-in-the-dark cat play tunnels available. You and your cat will love the cozy soft plush fabric in gray with a starry night print in white.

You only need to expose the tunnel to natural sunlight or lamplight to stimulate the glow-in-the-dark fabric. Customers confirm that the glow lasts about three to five hours.

This versatile tunnel can be converted into three different shapes: a straight tunnel, a zippered round, and an S-shaped tunnel. A cushion is included to convert the round into a pet bed. Your cat will love the added crinkle in the tunnel and the bed cushion.

Two holes in the side of the tunnel add additional hide-and-seek fun and ventilation. A plush ball on a string dangles in the opening to bring out their hunting instincts.

Best of all, it’s collapsible with hook-in-loop closures so it can be stowed when not in use. This great tunnel is also available in a three-way style and a 47.2-inch straight tunnel.

Tunnel Diameter: 9 inches | Dimensions: 47.2 x 9 inches | Material: Polyester plush and liner, metal frame | Colors: Gray/white | Collapsible: Yes

Final Verdict

Our top pick is the multi-colored KONG Play Spaces Rave Cave Cat Tunnel with flashing lights and disco music, which is very easy to set up and collapse for storage. If you have multiple cats, we recommend you opt for the 5-way Pawaboo Collapsible Tunnel for lots of space and variety that can stand alone or be attached to additional tunnels to create a meandering maze.

What to Look For in Cat Play Tunnels

Materials & Washability

Most of the tunnels available today are made from 100 percent polyester or a high percentage of polyester blend fabric. A few are cotton blends. While cotton is easy to wash, it also retains stains and odors more easily than polyester and is more expensive to produce.

Whichever tunnel you choose, follow the manufacturer's suggested cleaning instructions. Many tunnels have metal frames that can pierce fabric seams if washed in a machine. They could also be prone to rust if exposed to chemical cleaners or not properly dried.

If you have a kitten or a cat that is particularly rambunctious, opt for a tunnel with tear- and snag-resistant fabric, like the Pawaboo Collapsible 5-Way Tunnel.

Shape & Style

Some tunnels come as a single shape while others are convertible into several. Straight tunnels are the most common. Round cat play tunnels can often be unzipped to form S- and C-shaped tunnels with detachable cushions.

You’ll also find three-, four-, and five-way tunnels that can stand alone or be connected to create elaborate fun mazes. Most have an added hole in the top or side in addition to at least two tunnel openings that are perfect for hide-and-seek and surprise exits.

Each of these interesting shapes is available in a variety of colors. Unless you plan to put the tunnel away after each use, consider whether you care about matching your home decor. If you plan to leave it out for parties and houseguests, consider a cat play tunnel in a neutral color.

Our favorite style was the tasteful blue or gray Catit Vesper that will fit in most anywhere and looks well made. We also love that you can add whimsy by adding the rocket or castle sold separately to create a full playground for your feline.

Sounds and Smells

Consider how your cat handles loud noises when selecting your cat play tunnel. Most cats are excited by an added crinkle noise. But if your cat hides under the bed or in the closet a lot, you might avoid those with crackles built into the fabric, like the SmartyKat Crackle Chute Collapsible Tunnel.

Many tunnels include dangling plush toys in a variety of shapes and styles. Some include catnip to entice your cat to play. Consider whether you can replace the catnip that will lose its potency over time. If catnip is not included, you can always sprinkle some inside the tunnel to encourage your cat to explore.

Portability

Most cat tunnels take up some space and so are designed to be easily collapsible so that they can be stored in a closet or cabinet when company visits or to help keep the toy feeling fresh and new after periods of absence.

FAQ
  • Why do cats like play tunnels?

Cat play tunnels bring out the natural instincts in your cat. Whether they play alone or with the children, adults, or other animals in your home, they’ll love to flip-flop between playing pretend predator and prey roles. Chasing, hiding, and eventually napping all provide mental and physical stimulation for your kitty while reducing the amount of destructive chewing and scratching they do to your furniture and home.

  • How do I get my cat to play in the tunnel?

Not every cat is automatically drawn to play with a cat tunnel. Those sensitive to new people, sounds, and objects or who are generally a "fraidy-cat” might take some time to warm up to a cat play tunnel.

Senior cats play less often than kittens and adults so keep that in mind if they’re using it less often than you expected. Thankfully, there are ways to entice your cat to play more often and to help them adjust to and engage with new toys.
