In addition, a puppy’s breed also plays a role in what food is recommended. For example, large breeds, based on an adult weight of 70 pounds or more, can be more susceptible to excess calcium in their diets as they grow. Therefore, “it’s important to feed a large or giant breed a diet which has fairly constrained amounts of calcium throughout growth,” says Hill.
