It's made from a durable, heavy-duty polyester along with exceptionally sturdy zippers, and it's our top choice for a backpack-style cat carrier.

Since keeping a cat calm and comfortable is the top priority, the backpack features nine ventilation holes and two mesh side windows allowing for air to flow. And for humans, wearing the Space Capsule backpack is much more comfortable, with a more even distribution of weight, than standard cat carriers.

The Space Capsule backpack is suitable for cats weighing up to 12 pounds, and we found it best used for short trips, such as a walk to the veterinarian, since the capsule portion of the backpack is relatively small. When inside the main compartment, your cat will likely feel most comfortable in a seated position (there isn't much space for a cat to lie down), atop a plush mat that is included for stability. To keep your pet securely inside, there’s a built-in leash with a clip for attachment to a harness or collar.

For larger cats, Halinfer also offers a bigger backpack-style carrier, but in place of the rigid bubble design, the front of the backpack is made out of well-ventilated mesh.

While it’s not super roomy for the cat while inside, one of our favorite features of the Halinfer backpack carrier is its expandable back side, which more than doubles the interior size of the backpack by folding out like an accordion. This makes it a cinch to provide your cat with a lot of extra lying down or wiggle room when the backpack is off your shoulders. It also substantially improves ventilation.

We tested out the Halinfer with two adult cats and two kittens, taking each for a jaunt individually to see how they would acclimate to the carrier. Three out of our four participating cats instantly appeared at ease in the backpack, and we found the combination of rigid structure and full visibility to be the ideal setup for carrying a cat in a backpack. In between walks, with the expansion panel unzipped, the cats even played inside.

With most cats and seemingly all carriers, it can be tricky to get your cat inside when you need them to cooperate. The Space Capsule backpack offers two options: unzipping the plastic bubble or going through the round door on the side of the backpack. The first makes the carrier a little too open, and some cats can easily slip back out while you’re trying to zip them inside, but the latter is a little small for cats approaching the weight limit.

Unfortunately, the PetKit Breezy Dome Cat Backpack Carrier doesn’t come with its own power source, but it does provide a lot of flexibility by allowing you to hook it up to a USB power bank of your choice. The side pocket can easily accommodate 3 x 6-inch charging bricks, similar to what you might carry to recharge a cell phone. The ability to quickly swap between multiple power packs makes for a lot of flexibility, even if it’s disappointing to make another purchase on top of the backpack’s price.

Suitable for cats up to 17 pounds, the Petkit backpack carrier combines a rigid structure with lightweight materials, which makes for a comfortable wearing experience while providing your cat with a comfy, protected vantage point. A multi-layered back plate, combining breathable mesh, a layer of moisture-wicking pearl wool, and a hard EVA pad, makes the Breezy Dome Cat Backpack especially comfortable for the wearer. However, we did find that the flexible backing sometimes impinged on a cat’s interior space and made it more likely that they would feel the occasional nudge. 

Designed to accommodate a cat that’s standing (and presumably enjoying the view), the Petkit Breezy Dome is ideal for walks and leisure activities, but we don't recommend it as your primary cat carrier for long trips where your cat may need to rest inside.

At first, our tester was skeptical that the lightweight construction of the carrier could support their 20-pound cat, but they were pleasantly surprised by this well-appointed cat backpack. It's strong, spacious, and perfectly equipped for traveling with your cat. Plus, the durable neoprene fabric held up to our cat tester's clawing.

With the backpack off, the back of the backpack unzips to release a mesh pop-up that doubles the amount of enclosed space for a cat to roam, and the entire structure of the carrier can be collapsed and folded when not in use. On top of all that, it includes a waterproof litter box to use while you are staying outside of your home.

There are mesh panels throughout for ventilation, along with optional privacy curtains to provide shade from direct sunlight or reduce external stimulation. The backpack is recommended for cats and small dogs up to 16 pounds, but like our tester, who exceeded the recommendation by four pounds, you might find this backpack works for your hefty cat. We tried it out with four cats, and a few of them were scared of it, while the more social ones had no issue getting into the carrier. It has a nice furry blanket lining on the bottom of the carrier, providing a cushy place for your cat to lie. And we liked the hook you can attach to your cat's collar to keep them safe and secure.

It fits comfortably on your shoulders, although we did find that it is a bit tricky to put the backpack on without tilting and disturbing the cat residing in it. The backpack comes in multiple colors, so you can select the one best suited to your cat's style.

The Henkelion Cat Backpack Carrier has a nice viewing area in the front and mesh windows on the side for lots of places for your cat to peek out and you to peek in to ensure that they are calm and comfortable when traveling. It fits nicely under the seat of an airplane and is lightweight and easy to carry on your shoulders. We found the zippers a bit finicky sometimes, but the overall structure of the carrier was sturdy.

Your pet needs to be no more than 10 pounds for them to fit comfortably in this carrier. It comes in several different color options and is made of ABS material (a type of plastic) and Oxford cloth.

We didn't test the Pecute Cat Carrier Backpack, but nearly 14.500 shoppers at Amazon gave it a five-star rating, so we think it's worth recommending. This backpack carrier shares some of the same qualities as our top travel pick, but with a lower price tag. It's just as roomy as the Pidan backpack, even when the extension is not in use.

A steel wire frame supports the nylon mesh-enclosed pop-up extension, so it's stable and sturdy. Yet, unlike the Pidan model, this one folds down totally flat to sit flush against the back panel. making it far less bulky. The extension also has its own lockable zippered entrance/exit, one of four built into the backpack.

The thick, supportive bottom liner covered in a soft, plush material also provides your cat with a more comfortable experience. Plus, shoulder and waist buckles provide extra support and better weight distribution when carrying both cat and backpack.

On the downside, the shoulder straps on this model are not as well-padded and adjustable as on the Pidan. However, the Pecute is available in two sizes—L has a 15.4-pound maximum, and XL has a 24-pound maximum—and in multiple colors.
